Zumba can be defined as a dance form devised specially for physical fitness. Columbian choreographers and dancers Alberto Perlman and Beto Perez are the pioneers of this dance form. This technique became famous since the 1990’s. The trademark of Zumba has been possessed by Zumba Fitness, LLC. In the 1990s, Beto Perez first experimented with the method of non-conventional merengue and salsa music and improvised on one of his classes. The formula clicked and succeeded instantly in Columbia. He teamed up with Alberto Perlman in 2001 thereby producing a demo reel, which was subsequently licensed by Fitness Quest.
Zumba is a combination of dance and aerobic movements synchronized together to create an exercise routine to achieve a good level of physical fitness. The choreography includes various dance forms like mambo, salsa, hip-hop, soca, merengue, cumbia, flamenco, axé music, tango, reggaeton, chachacha and samba.
Exercises like lunges and squats are also included. The regular classes are usually lasts about an hour and are taught by Zumba Fitness, LLC licensed trainers and instructors. Zumba offers a wide range of options to choose from according one’s physical capability thus claiming it to be safe for all age groups.
Zumba offers nine different classes of according to the levels of age and exertion. They include Zumba Gold, Zumba Step, Zumba Toning, Aqua Zumba, Zumba with the Circuit, Zumba Kids, Zumba Kids Junior, Zumba Sentao and Zumba Gold-Toning. While some of these programs aim at the older and the kids’ population, the others target at body toning and weight loss.
